2025 USS Forrestal Scholarship Competition Details
LCDR Hugh R. McCabe Presidential Scholarship Competition
A. ENTRY GUIDELINES:
- The Essay entered must be legibly written, typed, or printed on one side of an 8 ½ X 11" sheet of paper.
- The Essay entered must be Headed/Entitled with the correct Theme/Subject.
- The Essay entered must be more words in length than the Minimum Number of Words stipulated and fewer words in length than the Maximum Number of Words stipulated.
- The Essay entered must be accompanied by a Separate Sheet with the Entrant's Full Name, Full Address, Telephone Number, Email Address, School Name (or “Home Schooled”) and Location (City, State), and his/her current Grade or “High School Graduate.” None of this information is to be included within, upon, or attached to the submitted Essay Entry, itself.
B. 2025 CONTEST DETAILS:
- For 2025, the Monetary Award Levels are: First Place is $3,000.00 and Second Place is $2,000.00.
- The Essay Theme for 2025 is “Define what the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution means to you.” The Minimum Number of Words required is 250 and the Maximum Number of Words allowed is 500.
- All Scholarship Competition Entries must be Postmarked by July 15, 2025 and mailed to the Forrestal Scholarship Competition Manager, Mr. Robert Zakian, 47 Woodside Meadow Rd., York, ME 03909.
C. ESSAY JUDGING:
- Three (3) Judges will independently read and score every one of the entries. The authors of the entries will be totally unknown to the Judges.
- The Essays will be Scored as follows:
2a) 0-30 Points for ORIGINALITY.
2b) 0-30 Points for CONTENT.
2c) 0-30 Points for ACCURACY.
2d) 0-10 Points for GRAMMAR/SPELLING.
3. A combined (2a+2b+2c+2d) Minimum Score of 80 or above is required to qualify for any award.
4. Judging will be completed and the Winner(s) announced by no later than August 15, 2025.
D. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION:
- Scholarship Awards can be used for a 4-Year Undergraduate College or University, a 2-Year Community College, or a Technical/Vocational School.
- Once the USS Forrestal Association, Inc. Scholarship Chairman has announced the First, Second, and Third Place Winners, the Forrestal Association's Secretary/Treasurer shall prepare and mail Award Checks in the appropriate amounts directly to the Winners.
- Scholarship Award Winners agree to allow the USS Forrestal Association, Inc. to publish their essay and their current photo which they will provide upon request.
