Forrestal Reunion The USS Forrestal (CVA/CV/AVT-59) Association, Inc.

What is the Forrestal Reunion?

The USS Forrestal Reunion is an annual event organized to reunite former USS Forrestal CVA/CV/AVT-59 Crewmembers (Ship’s Company, Air Wing, Marine Det, etc.), to remember and share their experiences and celebrate the vessel's history. Held 2024 in Pensacola, Florida, this event is organized by the USS Forrestal Association, Inc. to enable its veterans to meet annually to rekindle the fellowship that arose in the course of their service in the world's first supercarrier. These reunions are not just informal parties; they are also rather solemn meetings that allow us to remember our past Shipmates to ensure their deeds are not forgotten.

History of the USS Forrestal and the Reunion

The USS Forrestal, commissioned in 1955, was a pioneering vessel that set the standard for future aircraft carriers. Named after James V. Forrestal, the first Secretary of Defense, this ship was designed to accommodate jet aircraft, marking a significant advancement in naval aviation. USS Forrestal's service spanned nearly four decades, during which it played a crucial role in numerous military operations, including the Suez Crisis, the Lebanon Crisis, and the Vietnam War.

The history of the USS Forrestal Reunion is intertwined with the ship's legacy. Founded in 1990, three years before the ship was decommissioned, the Reunion Association was created by a dedicated group of former shipmates. Recognized as an IRS Section 501(c)(19) non-profit military veteran organization, the Association has been instrumental in keeping the spirit of the Forrestal alive. The reunions provide a platform for former crew members to gather, reminisce, and honor their shared USS Forrestal history. Every five years, the reunion is held in Washington, D.C., allowing members to pay their respects at the Vietnam Wall and at Arlington National Cemetery, where a Mass Grave with 18 of our 135 Forrestal shipmates who died in 1967 are laid to rest.

The reunions have also included tours of naval bases, historical lectures, and social events, providing a comprehensive experience for attendees.
